What causes bad breath?

Bad breath can be the result of a number of factors. It can be a cause of embarrassment but it can be treated. Here are the most common causes of bad breath.

1. Poor oral hygiene - This is one of the most common causes. If you don't brush and floss regularly, food particles can remain in your mouth, promoting bacterial growth and causing odour.

2. Food and drink - Certain foods and drinks like garlic, onions, coffee, and alcohol can contribute to bad breath because they contain volatile oils that can be carried through your bloodstream to your lungs and exhaled.

3. Tobacco use - Smoking or chewing tobacco can leave chemicals in your mouth that contribute to bad breath, as well as increase your risk of gum disease, another source of bad breath.

4. Dry mouth - Saliva helps cleanse your mouth and remove food particles. If your mouth doesn't produce enough saliva, due to conditions like dehydration, salivary gland problems, or sleeping with your mouth open, bad breath can result.

5. Infections - Infections in the mouth, such as gum disease, tooth decay, or mouth sores, can produce unpleasant odors.

6. Medical conditions - Certain medical conditions like respiratory infections, chronic sinusitis, diabetes, liver or kidney problems, and acid reflux can contribute to bad breath.

7. Medications - Some medications can cause dry mouth as a side effect, reducing saliva production and leading to bad breath.

8. Dieting - Low-carb diets, which cause the body to break down fat for energy, can cause bad breath due to the release of chemicals called ketones in the breath.

9. Crash dieting/fasting - Fasting or crash dieting can lead to bad breath due to the breakdown of fats, which can release foul-smelling ketones.

10. Poorly fitting dental appliances - Dentures or braces that aren't cleaned properly or don't fit well can harbor food particles and bacteria, leading to bad breath.

Addressing bad breath often involves improving oral hygiene habits, regular dental check-ups, staying hydrated, and addressing any underlying medical conditions.
