What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw-like fixture that serves as a replacement for the root portion of a missing tooth. It is surgically placed into the jawbone beneath the gum line, where it fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration. Once the implant has integrated with the surrounding bone tissue, it provides a stable foundation for a replacement tooth or dental restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture.

We work with each of our patient’s to achieve the best oral health outcome. Our process usually involves the following steps:

1. Initial Consultation - During your initial consultation, the dentist will evaluate your oral health, take dental X-rays or scans, and discuss your treatment options for replacing missing teeth. Dental implants may be recommended if you have one or more missing teeth and have sufficient bone density to support the implants.

2. Implant Placement - The dental implant procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia or sedation to ensure your comfort. The dentist will make an incision in the gum tissue to access the jawbone and create a space for the implant. The implant is then carefully placed into the jawbone at the site of the missing tooth. In some cases, a temporary restoration may be placed over the implant to protect it during the healing process.

3. Osseointegration - Over the several weeks to months, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone tissue through osseointegration. This process allows the implant to become firmly anchored in the jawbone, providing a stable foundation for the final restoration.

4. Abutment Placement - Once osseointegration has occurred, a small connector piece called an abutment is attached to the top of the implant. The abutment protrudes through the gum line and serves as the attachment point for the final dental restoration.

5. Final Restoration - After the gum tissue has healed around the abutment, a custom-made dental restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture, is fabricated to replace the missing tooth or teeth. The restoration is securely attached to the abutment, completing the dental implant process.

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last for many years, providing a permanent solution for replacing missing teeth and restoring oral function and aesthetics. It's essential to maintain good oral hygiene habits, such as regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, to ensure the longevity of your dental implants.

The All-on-4 implant is a dental procedure designed to provide a complete set of fixed teeth using just four dental implants per jaw. It's primarily used for patients who have lost most or all of their teeth in one or both jaws and are looking for a permanent solution to restore their smile and oral function.

In traditional dental implant procedures, each missing tooth would typically be replaced with an individual implant. However, the All-on-4 technique utilizes only four implants strategically placed in the jawbone to support a full set of replacement teeth. These implants are typically inserted at precise angles to maximize the available bone and avoid the need for bone grafting in many cases.

Once the implants are placed, a fixed dental bridge or denture is attached to them, providing a stable and natural-looking set of teeth. This approach offers several benefits, including reduced treatment time, lower cost compared to replacing each tooth with an individual implant, and the ability to provide immediate function in many cases.
